On December 4th, 2012, Blue Oak Energy announced that it has installed Arizona's largest rooftop solar system. The 4.1 megawatt solar rooftop system is located at First Solar's facility in Mesa and is expected to begin operation by year end.

The system covers approximately 900,000 square feet of rooftop area, using nearly 55,000 thin-film photovoltaic (PV) solar modules manufactured by First Solar. The system is secured with a proprietary ballasted mounting system, resulting in no penetration of the existing roof surface.

The solar electric system was engineered to support the development of new test procedures, wiring methods and other innovative approaches to advance PV technology. An outdoor inverter test pad provides a flexible testing area where inverters and other equipment may be switched and relocated with ease.

"This system is world-class because of the high-quality installation, multidisciplinary teamwork and aligned interests to complete the project," said Tobin Booth, CEO of Blue Oak Energy. "It's a testament to First Solar's commitment to operating world-class facilities that minimize their corporate carbon footprint."

This solar electric system will displace approximately 4,000 metric tons of CO2 per year that would be emitted by conventional generation.
